解説：梅は８世紀奈良時代に、唐国から薬として伝わったとされている。冬の寒さを乗り越え咲くその梅を眺めながら歌を詠み交わす「梅花の宴」が、お花見の原型になったと言われる。梅は神聖な木として尊ばれ、薬として重宝された事から、魔除けや災難除けとして鬼門の方角に庭木として植える風習が残る地方もある。
この作品の梅の花は2017年京都石清水八幡宮お膝元の松花堂庭園・美術館で発表したものを使っており、言わば新天地への飛び梅と言える。

Commentary：

It is said that the plum tree was introduced from Tang China to Japan during the Nara period in the 8th century, valued for its medicinal properties.

The custom of hanami is believed to have originated from Baika no En (“Gatherings for Plum Blossoms”), where people admired plum blossoms that had endured the harshness of winter and exchanged poems beneath their branches.

Revered as a sacred tree and prized as a medicine, the plum has long been associated with protection from misfortune and evil. In some regions of Japan, the tradition of planting plum trees in the kimon—the direction believed to invite malevolent influences—continues to this day.

The plum blossoms featured in this work were originally presented in 2017 at the Shokado Garden and Art Museum, at the foot of Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine. In that sense, they may be seen as tobi-ume—a “flying plum tree” that has journeyed to new ground.
