In the autumn sky as seen from Honshu, there is one galaxy that shines brighter than any other visible to the naked eye.

It is the Andromeda Galaxy, designated Messier 31 by the astronomer Charles Messier.

This striking presence in the autumn heavens appears astonishingly large—its apparent size is nearly five times that of the full moon.

It is the true celestial neighbor of our own Milky Way Galaxy, and is said to be the “mouth of the fish” sung of in "Song of the Stars" by Miyazawa Kenji.
