京都の清水寺にある随求堂では、全国的にも珍しい『胎内めぐり』が体験できる。
お堂の主尊である大随求菩薩の胎内に見立てた真っ暗闇の中を歩むことで、
参加者は一様に恐怖と神秘的な感覚を得た先に、再び外界へと出る（生まれ変わる）。
煩悩や穢を払う儀式であるが、現代で言うところのメディテーション（瞑想）の先駆けとも感じられる。

その清水寺から少し離れた山科に「清水焼団地」と言う、今なお陶工が多く住まう地域がある。
かのうはこの地で陶芸の家に生まれ育ち、自らのルーツである京焼を肌で憶えながら、
一方でアフリカの大地で出会ったプリミティブ（原始的）な焼物に衝撃を覚えて帰国する。
その両極は、以後かのうの作陶の振れ幅の両端であり続ける。

そんな彼のライフワークこそ、「壺」である。
時に現代的な解釈を大胆に取り入れ、時に太古の昔の趣を感じさせ、
あらゆる試みを「壺」に託して追究する姿は、禅僧のようでもある。
私たちは常に彼の謎掛けに対峙し、壺を前に自問自答する。
壺はいつも謎を残すまま、佇むのみである。
いざ、その内側の暗闇へと歩もう。

At Zuiguido Hall at Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto, visitors can experience a rare ritual known as “Tainai Meguri”(journey through the womb).
Walking through a pitch-black space modeled on the womb of Daizuigu Bosatsu, the principal deity enshrined in the hall, participants emerge once again into the outside world—reborn—after passing through a profound sense of fear and mystery.
The ritual is intended to cleanse one of worldly desires and impurities, yet it can also be seen as a precursor to what we now call meditation.

A short distance from Kiyomizu-dera, in the Yamashina area of Kyoto, lies Kiyomizu-yaki Danchi, a district where many potters still live and work today.
KANO was born and raised here in a family of potters. While absorbing the traditions of Kyo-yaki, his own roots, he was also deeply struck by the primitive pottery he encountered on the African continent, an experience that he brought back with him to Japan.
These two extremes have remained the opposite ends of the spectrum of KANO’s ceramic practice ever since.

And at the heart of his lifelong work lies the tsubo—the jar.
At times, he boldly incorporates contemporary interpretations; at others, his works evoke the atmosphere of a distant antiquity. Entrusting every experiment to the tsubo and pursuing it without end, he seems almost like a Zen monk.
We are constantly confronted with his riddles, finding ourselves questioning and answering ourselves before each tsubo.
The tsubo simply remains there, quietly standing, always leaving its mystery unresolved.
