KANO Takao

See the future in the pot.

“Where did his pottery come from?
They are primitive, traditional, and futuristic at the same time. It is as if he traveled back in time to give pottery to the ancient people from the far future.
KANO Takao is a man who travels through the history of ceramics.”
[From "PTF," a solo exhibition at PAKUPAKUAN, 2018]

“KANO Takao has a climbing kiln in Minamiyamashiromura Village, Kyoto, and fires ceramics in it twice a year, spring and autumn. This exhibition is exactly the opportunity to see the pieces fired in the latest firing.
How his works are fired changes a lot, depending on how flames are sent around them. It is the true pleasure of climbing kilns dealing with nature that we cannot often go as planned.
At this time, KANO Takao is making a lot of pots.
We cannot predict how his works, covered by ash in a kiln, would be completed. That’s why the “potter” is waiting for the moment the works would be put a spell on in a kiln.
The door of the kiln is about to be open!”
[From "The POTTER," a solo exhibition at PAKUPAKUAN, 2019]

He is a potter with roots in Kyo-ware (traditional style of ceramic art in Kyoto), but his experience of creating works in Africa gave him new inspiration to expand his own expression of "pottery".
In recent years, many of his best-known works, such as "KOCHU-TEN-ARI (enchanted land in a pot)", have been shown in museums.
We will introduce a number of his works that have a somewhat humorous and insatiable style and that show the true earthy taste of pottery.
