その色合い
その手触り
儚くも忘れ得ぬ
春の夜の夢の如し

Its presence,
its colors,
its texture,
Fleeting, yet unforgettable,
like a dream on a spring night.

私たちが普段手にするガラスの器は
疑う余地も無く固形であるが、
実は科学的にはガラスは液体が結晶化せずに
冷え固まった状態とされる。 
非晶質（アモルファス）と呼ばれるその不思議な物質は、
紀元前４千年とされるほど古い時代から人間を魅了し、
宝飾品としても・日用品としても
私たちの日常に必要不可欠な存在であり続けている。

奥島圭二の作品からは、非晶質の個体であるガラスそのものが
今なおゆっくりと変化しているかのような、
静かな動的印象を受ける。
その色彩は万華鏡のように華やかでありながら、
記憶の中の印象を一つに固定しない。
まるで夢の中の楽園で見た景色のように、
朧ろげであり儚い。
しかし同時に、極めて粘性の高い液体であるガラスの特性が、
他の素材では成し得ない美しいフォルムを生み出し、
一瞬の映像を固形化する。

非結晶の夢は、私たちの掌で蘇る。

The glass vessels we hold in our hands are, without question, solid objects. Yet scientifically, glass is understood as a state in which a liquid has cooled and hardened without crystallizing.
This mysterious substance—known as an amorphous material—has captivated humanity since ancient times, as early as 4000 BCE. Whether as jewelry or as everyday items, glass has remained an indispensable presence in our daily lives.

In the works of OKUSHIMA Keiji, one senses a quiet dynamism, as if the glass itself—an amorphous solid—continues to change ever so slowly even now.
Its colors are as vibrant as those of a kaleidoscope, yet they never fix a single impression in the viewer’s memory.

Like a landscape glimpsed in a dreamlike paradise, they remain hazy and ephemeral.
At the same time, the very nature of glass as a highly viscous liquid gives rise to forms of beauty that cannot be achieved with other materials, solidifying a fleeting moment into shape.

The dream of the amorphous comes alive in the palms of our hands.

　1977　京都生まれ、滋賀育ち
　2000　立命館大学産業社会学部 卒業
　2002　富山ガラス造形研究所造形科 卒業
　　　　  卒業後はガラス工房、着物染色工房に勤務
　2010　ガラス作家として独立、滋賀県高島市にアトリエを構える

　1977  Born in Kyoto, and grew up in Shiga pref.
　2000  Graduated from Ritsumeikan University industrial society department
　2002  Graduated from Toyama glass molding Institute, molding course
　　　　 After graduating, work in a glass studio, a kimono dyeing studio
　2010  Became independent as a glass artist and set up the atelier in Takashima-shi, Shiga pref.
